The Perkins is seeking a Bioresources Technician on a full time permanent basis, located at our state-of the-art medical research facilities in Nedlands. The Bioresources Technician is an important part of the Bioresources Team, helping to achieve a high level of technical support and animal husbandry to help us meet our goals.
About this role
Reporting to the Bioresources Manager, the Bioresources Technician will contribute to medical research by providing care to specialised research rodents and assisting in the day-to-day maintenance of the Perkin’s rodent facilities located at Perkins North (Nedlands) and Perkins South (Murdoch). The role is to also provide support and education to all research personnel to ensure they follow all safety procedures, code obligations and operating processes in the rodent facilities.
The main function of this role includes:
- Maintain the husbandry and welfare of research rodents to a high standard. This includes general room cleaning, hygiene, feeding and watering of rodents.
- Ensure that all scientific procedures are performed according to the standards and practices of the facilities and that all legal and regulatory guidelines are followed.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of facility operating procedures, animal care and workplace safety requirements.
- Contribute to major projects that improve processes, productivity, and services. This may include responsibility for project tasks under broad direction.
- As per standard procedures, maintain appropriate facility records to ensure compliance with the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), Perkins Safety and Health guidelines and the Perkins Animal Ethics Committee (AEC).
- Provide advice and assistance to users of the facility, reporting and escalating unsafe or unethical practices.
- Provide training to researchers in the maintenance of animal welfare and technical procedures.
- Contribute to a high level of user satisfaction by providing a professional and thorough service.
- Organise, maintain and sanitise consumables, animal cages, enrichment and equipment by operating cage wash machines, autoclaves and decontamination chambers.
- Specific technical tasks associated with each location. This may include breeding and husbandry at Perkins South and research related activities in Perkins North.
To be successful in this role, you’ll have:
- VET/TAFE qualifications in Animal Technology or a qualification that is relatable or transferable, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Experience working with rodents and understanding their maintenance and care.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills with the ability to interact professionally and effectively.
- Ability to follow directions and SOPs with strong attention to detail, applying well-developed organisational and planning skills to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively in a team environment and independently when required.
- Flexible approach to duties along with the ability to work under pressure.
- Proficient in a range of computing skills including Microsoft Office.
- Previous experience within a research organisation that cares for rodents or in a similar role (desirable).
- Satisfactory National Police Certificate.
