From the Lab to a Lifeline: Discovery, Hope and the Breakthrough Drug for Heart Disease 

Cardiovascular disease is Australia’s leading cause of death, claiming one life every 12 minutes. But a groundbreaking discovery by researchers at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research could transform how we treat one of its biggest causes.  

Join Associate Professor Juliana Hamzah and Professor Shirley Jansen AM for an inspiring panel discussion exploring the journey of ATH01, a world-first drug candidate designed to remove cholesterol and other harmful lipids from artery walls, potentially preventing heart attacks, strokes and amputations caused by atherosclerosis. 

After more than a decade of research and extensive pre-clinical testing, ATH01 is on the path towards first-in-human clinical trials. Discover how this remarkable innovation was developed, what makes it different from existing treatments, and the potential it holds to transform care for patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. 

Hosted by investigative journalist Miriam Borthwick, the panel discussion will also feature Melissa Noonan AM, CEO of Limbs4Life, and Christine Tawtel, Deputy Chair of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Australia. They will share the lived experience of cardiovascular disease and the hope that innovative research brings to patients and families in Australia and around the world. 

Representatives from Atherid Therapeutics, the biotechnology company founded by Juliana and Shirley to translate ATH01 from laboratory discovery to patient lifeline, will be there to answer questions about the commercialisation process and the challenges and opportunities of bringing a new therapy to market. 

The session concludes with a live audience Q&A, offering the opportunity to join the conversation, ask questions and hear directly from the researchers and patient advocates.
