Join us for the launch of the Biota Pipeline – Harnessing the power of nature to find new treatments for deadly diseases.
Emeritus Professor George Yeoh
Group Leader, Liver Disease & Carcinogenesis Laboratory
The Biota Pipeline was born from one man’s love of nature as a resource, comfort and most importantly healer. Chris Reichstein did not live to see his legacy come to life, but you can help make this happen in his honour.
You’re invited to join Emeritus Professor George Yeoh, who has dedicated his life’s work to finding the “canary in the coal mine” of liver cancer, to hear about how a local sea creature might hold the key to a new treatment to fight cancer.
Sea sponges harvested from under the Busselton Jetty contain unique chemical compounds which exhibit anti-inflammatory, antiviral and anticancer activities. Prof Yeoh is working with researchers at The University of Western Australia (UWA) to identify and characterise those compounds, which may unlock a new cancer treatment.
Busselton sea sponges are just one of the potential nature-based disease-fighting treatments being investigated right here in WA’s South West Ecoregion. It’s one of only two Global Biodiversity Hotspots in the country, containing the highest concentration of rare and endangered species, many of which have been shown to have medicinal properties.
This is your opportunity to collaborate with expert scientists to develop WA’s first specialty research pipeline to test natural organisms for their disease-fighting properties and support discoveries from lab bench to patient bedside.
