Profile

Professor Elin Gray graduated from Havana University with Suma Cum Laude in BSc Biochemistry in 1998, and MSc in Immunology in 2001. She undertook her doctoral and early postdoctoral research (2006-2011) in the HIV research field at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, Johannesburg, South Africa and undertook training at the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA and the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, Duke University, USA. Her studies during this period contributed substantially to the understanding of the co-evolution of the virus and the neutralizing antibody response during natural HIV-1 infection.

She was recruited to Edith Cowan University, Western Australia in July 2011, where she applied her experience in single cell analysis, molecular biology and antibody characterisation to drive the development of blood biomarkers for melanoma. Professor Gray was awarded the inaugural Cancer Research Trust Fellowship (2014-2019) and a Cancer Council WA Research Fellowship (2019-2022). Her research in cancer biomarkers has significantly contributed to the ongoing paradigm shift in cancer diagnostics, from one that is historically based on the analysis of tumour biopsy to the use of liquid biopsies (blood/body fluid-based assays that can be used to derive genetic and phenotypic information about the tumour/s of a patient).

Professor Gray has been the Deputy Director of the Centre for Precision Health since 2021 and head of the Translational Melanoma Research Group at Edith Cowan University. She currently leads a team of 4 post-doctoral scientists, 1 clinical fellow, 3 research assistants and 10 post-graduate students. She is also the Course Coordinator for the Master of Medical and Health Science by Research.

Over her career, she had published over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles (8819 cites, h-index of 51 – Google Scholar/ 6130 cites, h-index 43 – Scopus), 70 of them in the last 5 years, with an overall FWCI of 1.65.
