Laboratory Maintenance Technician

The Perkins is seeking a proactive and organised Laboratory Maintenance Technician to support the BioDiscovery Centre’s educational programs. This hands-on role is responsible for preparing and maintaining laboratory resources, equipment and inventory, ensuring laboratories are safe, well organised and ready to deliver engaging STEM and medical research learning experiences. This position is offered on a Part time basis and is located at our state-of-the-art medical research facilities in Nedlands.

About this role

Reporting to the Community Education Manager, the Laboratory Maintenance Technician plays a key role in supporting the delivery of the BioDiscovery Centre’s educational programs by ensuring laboratory facilities, equipment and resources are safe, organised and ready for use. Working closely with the Community Education team, you will manage laboratory preparation, maintain equipment and inventory, develop laboratory procedures, and ensure education sessions are supported with high-quality resources and a well-maintained laboratory environment.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Prepare laboratory equipment, materials and resources for education programs and practical activities.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, consumables and inventory, ensuring stock levels are monitored and replenished.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Coordinate equipment servicing, maintenance and replacement as required.
  • Set up laboratory spaces to ensure they are safe, organised and ready for education sessions.
  • Monitor laboratory budgets and maintain accurate records of equipment and resources.
  • Work collaboratively with the Community Education team to support the successful delivery of STEM education programs.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and professional laboratory environment in line with Institute standards.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Science (Laboratory Science or a related discipline).
  • Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment, including laboratory maintenance, equipment management and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Sound practical laboratory skills and confidence using common laboratory equipment and techniques.
  • Experience managing laboratory inventory, ordering consumables and coordinating equipment servicing.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • A current Working with Children Check (or the ability to obtain one) and a satisfactory National Police Clearance.
