General Manager, Facilities

The Perkins is seeking an experienced and driven General Manager, Facilities to lead the strategic and day-to-day management of two cutting-edge research hubs. This role is your opportunity to shape the environment where world-leading discoveries into cancer, heart disease, and rare genetic disorders come to life — while overseeing the commercial and operational performance of these landmark, multi-tenant facilities. This position is offered on a full time permanent basis, located at our state-of the-art medical research facilities at Perkins North (Nedlands), with the requirement to regularly travel to Perkins South (Murdoch).

About this role

As the Facilities Manager of major medical research facilities in Nedlands (Perkins North) and Murdoch (Perkins South), the Perkins is responsible for delivering Facilities Management across these premises.

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), the General Manager (GM) of Facilities is a critical leadership role ensuring the safety, efficiency and commercial management of the Perkins’ multi-tenant research facilities. They lead the development and execution of the operational plan and budgets for Facilities Management (FM), ensuring the buildings and related services are safe, secure, efficient, cost-effective, customer-focused, and compliant with all relevant, legislation, Codes and regulations.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Provide leadership to the Facility Managers and FM team to implement the FM budget and operational plan.
  • Oversee the commercial management of space within Perkins buildings. This includes managing and monitoring the contract and lease arrangements for tenants and overseeing contractor relationships.
  • Identify and ensure the implementation of opportunities that create alignment between FM and the broader Perkins infrastructure, systems, processes, policies, technology, and culture.
  • Oversee all building infrastructure, ensuring it is safe, secure, compliant, efficient, and maintained/upgraded as required by appropriately skilled personnel.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with building tenants and stakeholders and deliver a high level of customer service, effectively resolving complex problems.
  • Ensure procurement activities are competitive, efficient, and ethical.
  • This role would suit someone with prior experience in a similar role managing complex infrastructure and/or tenanted buildings

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (business, work health and safety, engineering), Diploma of Facilities Management, relevant trades qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience in a similar Facilities Management role at a senior management level.
  • Strong financial literacy with demonstrated experience developing and managing complex budgets.
  • Strong commercial acumen and experience tendering, managing, and implementing commercial contracts with the ability to identify contract risks.
  • Previous experience successfully implementing building efficiencies through engineering and other mechanisms to reduce cost and improve performance, sustainability, and other outcomes.
  • Experience developing policies, procedures, SOPs, managing change and implementing process improvements.
  • Strong team management experience and capacity building skills across a diverse portfolio.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, Building Codes, and Work Health and Safety legislation.
  • Sound project management skills, including the ability to manage deliverables and related budgets.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills and the ability to utilise these to engage and build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills and the ability to navigate interpersonal and organisational challenges, stakeholder relationships, and commercial outcomes successfully.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise tasks, work effectively under pressure, problem solve and meet deadlines.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications, building managements systems, and procurement systems.
  • Possess a current Western Australian ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence and a Satisfactory National Police Certificate.
