Repeat head impacts in sports – can we restore brain function and recover lost memories?

Mark Burns, PhD is a Professor and Vice-Chair of Neuroscience at Georgetown University Medical Center. Mark earned his PhD at the University of Galway, Ireland and was a postdoctoral scholar at New York University.

Since 2009, he has directed the Laboratory for Brain Injury and Dementia at Georgetown University. The lab’s goal is to understand how repeated head impact disrupts the normal function of the brain and can lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia.  His lab has secured over $8m in NIH (National Institutes of Health) funding in the past ten years, and he has published over 60 papers, including high-impact manuscripts in Nature Medicine and the Lancet Neurology.

Mark also directs neuroanatomy and neuroscience courses for medical and graduate students, and he has been awarded the Golden Apple for excellence in medical school teaching.

A light lunch will be served in the foyer following the presentation.
