Perkins’ Vacation Scholarship participants present their results

Every year, the Harry Perkins Institute provides scholarships to second and third-year undergraduate and postgraduate students from WA universities to take part in the Perkins Vacation Scholarship program. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable a student to carry out research within the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. These scholarships provide students with an exciting opportunity to learn valuable research skills and sample real-life medical research in the laboratories of leading scientists.

This year’s participants:

  • Luna-Faye Veld: “Determining cmvIL-10 isoforms in human plasma samples” (supervised by Shelley Waters)
  • Fin Lip: “Orva: an interactive, personalised, generative AI platform for understanding and managing your own health” (supervised by Girish Dwivedi)
  • Manuli Perrera: “Determining gender-specific biomarkers in atherosclerosis” (supervised by Juliana Hamzah)
  • Xiaofu Wang: “Modelling sepsis pathophysiology: modelling human microvascular dysfunction to enable improvement of patient outcomes” (supervised by Erika Bosio)
  • Catherina Micucci-Allen: “Investigating the pathogenicity of TUBB6 variants associated with isolated ptosis” (supervised by Gina Ravenscroft and Mridul Johari)
  • Zhuang Min Lee: “Investigating the effect of collagen hydrogel stiffness and elasticity on P-glycoprotein (P-gp) function in breast cancer cells (supervised by Brendan Kennedy)
  • Harrison Laycock: Modifying LEPROT and LEPROTL1 gene expression with antisense oligonucleotides to combat obesity and metabolic syndrome (supervised by Girish Dwivedi)
  • Ethan Judge: “Enhancing diagnosis of steatotic liver disease by AI-driven analysis of coronary CT angiography images” (supervised by Girish Dwivedi)
  • Kirti Giridhar: “Validation of combinatorial epimodifier constructs for targeted gene expresison in mammalian cells” (supervised by Ryan Lister)

A light lunch will be served in the foyer following the presentation.
