Professor Julie McMullen graduated with a BSc(Hons) and PhD from the School of Physiology & Pharmacology at the University of NSW under the supervision of Dr Karen Gibson and Prof Eugenie Lumbers. She then trained at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre and Harvard Medical School in Boston before establishing her laboratory at the Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute in 2005. After almost 20 years at the Baker, she joined the Heart Research Institute (mid-2024) as Deputy Director and Director of Research.
She is recognised for research which defined the molecular distinction between physiological and pathological heart enlargement in mouse models of health and disease. Her research interests also include atrial fibrillation, heart-derived organ crosstalk, cardiotoxicity and sex differences. Her research team has published in journals including PNAS, Circulation, Nature Comms, Nature Cardiovascular Research and European Heart Journal. She currently holds a NHMRC Investigator grant and is the President of the International Society for Heart Research-Australasian Section.
