The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, affectionately known as ‘the Perkins’, is Western Australia’s leading medical research facility focussed on finding kinder treatments and better health outcomes for people living with cancer, heart disease, diabetes or rare genetic disorders. BioDiscovery Education Officer

Description

About you

We’re looking for an enthusiastic educator with a deep passion for communicating to high school students core principles of biomedical science and the value these bring to our community.

 

About this role

The Community Education Officer is an important part of the Lotterywest BioDiscovery Team. This team delivers education programs to school groups and the wider community at our purpose build community lab housed inside the Perkins Institute in Nedlands. The aim of the BioDiscovery Centre is to inspire the next generation of science researchers and encouraging community support for our vital research.

 

This position includes program development, class facilitation and operational functions. There is also an opportunity to take variations of these programs out to regional and remote schools.

 

To be the best at this role, you’ll bring:

  • First point of call in the BioDiscovery Centre (BDC), including answering of telephone calls / emails to the Centre in a responsive and professional manner.
  • Face to Face teaching of courses, as required.
  • Assist with the development and evaluation of new and existing programs where and as required.
  • Co-ordinate marketing materials on BDC courses for schools, public and corporate groups.
  • Scheduling and administration relating to courses and sessions.

BioDiscovery Laboratory Maintenance Assistant

About the BioDiscovery Team

The BioDiscovery Team is responsible for delivering outreach education programs for the Perkins to school groups and the wider community. The Centre works to bring an understanding of the research at the Perkins with the aim of inspiring the next generation of science researchers and encouraging community support of our vital research.

 

About you

We’re looking for a science buff who knows their way around a lab, is super-organised, and able to creatively trouble-shoot. A sense of humour would also be great as the team is hard-working and fun and runs on bad jokes and quick quips!

 

About this role

The Laboratory Maintenance Assistant is an important part of the Bio Discovery Team.

 

This role is responsible for preparing session materials and maintaining the demonstration laboratory for schools and community classes. This includes managing the physical resources and ensuring the environment is always clean and operational.

 

This position is for 8 hours per week. There is some flexibility with hours which is ideal for a researcher! A Fixed Term 12-month appointment is on offer. The role is based in the Perkins North site in Nedlands.

 

The main functions of the role include:

  1. Maintain an inventory of equipment in laboratory.
  2. Maintain, monitor and order, when necessary, consumable items.
  3. Collaborate with Education Manager to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for wet lab activities.
  4. Collaborate with Education Manager to develop staff laboratory duties and SOPs before, during and after activities.
  5. Monitor cleanliness and tidiness of the laboratory to always ensure a presentable public image for visitors.
  6. Monitor and maintain a base line set up when laboratory is not prepared for an activity.
  7. Monitor and arrange required servicing of equipment.
  8. Establish operational knowledge of all technology within the demonstration lab
  9. Prepare wet lab materials as required for activities – in consultation with Education Manager and Education Officer as required

The Perkins provides travel grants for staff to attend relevant national or international conferences.

Weekly seminars
Innovation in research can be realised by sharing ideas and broadening our exposure to advances in similar disciplines. The Perkins Seminar Series provides an opportunity for all employees to engage with a range of researchers, clinicians and other practitioners on medical research issues. Speakers range from students to world-renowned experts in their field. Seminars are held weekly.

Education assistance

Wes Allen

Research Associate

Wes joined the Perkins in 2015 as part of the BRITElab team, developing devices to assist surgeons during tumour removal surgery. In 2013, equipped with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Biomedical Engineering, Wes moved from Ireland to Western Australia. In January 2015 Wes started a PhD in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at The University of Western Australia. During his time at the Perkins, Wes has had the opportunity to share his research outcomes broadly, both locally and internationally and credits the collaborative network he has formed during this time with helping his progress his important research.
