Professor Charles Feldman is Emeritus Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, Honorary Consultant (non-clinical) Monash Health, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Monash University. He was previously Professor of Pulmonology and Chief Physician of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and the University of the Witwatersrand between 1995 and 2017. Professor Feldman’s research interest is in the field of community-acquired pneumonia, particularly pneumococcal pneumonia. His research has always been translational. While his earlier basic research investigated interactions between the pneumococcus and the human host, to understand aspects of the pathogenesis of pneumococcal pneumonia, his more recent work has been on understanding mechanisms of the cardiovascular consequences of pneumococcal infections. Professor Feldman has been active in both local and international medical societies, and he has been elected a Fellow of both the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society. He has more than 400 publications in the international literature and over 250 congress presentations. In 2018 he received the Platinum Gold Medal from the South African for a lifetime of research in the human health. In 2021, the University of Pretoria (UP) bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Medicine (honoris causa) on Professor Feldman for his significant contribution to the field of pneumococcal respiratory infections.
