Work, Health & Safety Manager

The Perkins is seeking a motivated and dynamic work, health and safety leader to lead the complete range of WHS priorities, programs, and systems at our Institute.

This is a new position offered on a permanent full-time basis, though consideration will also be given to candidates preferring to work 0.8 FTE for caring responsibilities.

This position is primarily located at our state-of the-art medical research facilities in Nedlands, though regular travel to our campuses in Murdoch and at Royal Perth Hospital will also be required.

About this role

Reporting to the Chief People Officer as part of the People, Culture & Safety team, the Work, Health & Safety Manager is a important leadership role that will enable the Institute to keep our people safe; identify, manage and mitigate WHS risks; meet WHS compliance; and drive strong safety performance and a culture of safety.

In addition to being a proudly-WA, internationally recognised medical research institute, the Perkins is the PCBU of a multi-tenanted environment, managing two large facilities in Nedlands (QEII campus) and Murdoch (FSH campus). This will see the WHS Manager building close relationships with our tenants, affiliates, and Perkins leaders to ensure we have a holistic SMS and that we are equipped to effectively evaluate and manage risks related to WHS to keep everyone safe and meet compliance requirements.

Initial key priorities for this role include:

  • Identifying, developing and implementing a comprehensive safety management system, including online safety reporting and incident management
  • Collaborating with the People & Culture team to address psychosocial risks
  • Conducting gap analysis of WHS compliance and risk management and developing remediation plans, working with stakeholders to implement these
  • Upskilling leaders in WHS responsibilities and promoting the importance of safety to build a positive and proactive safety culture

This role would suit someone who is a natural problem-solver, is able to map processes and workflows with strong attention to detail, and who loves to collaborate to implement solutions.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • A tertiary qualification in WHS with a detailed understanding of WHS legislation, regulations, Codes, and ISO45001
  • Experience successfully developing and implementing safety management systems
  • A strong focus on systems and the impact on the end-user (our people)
  • Experience using data to understand performance, guide decision making, and implement improvements
  • A performance and goal-oriented mindset and the ability to successfully deliver on commitments
  • The ability to successfully manage projects and initiatives

If you really want to stand out, tell us about your understanding of, or experience in, medical research or laboratories, biosafety, radiation, poisons, or facilities infrastructure.

If this sounds like the right fit, we can offer you:

  • Flexible working options
  • A supportive and passionate team
  • The opportunity to make a positive impact in a community-focused organisation with global reach
  • The ability to salary package up to $18,550 annually, meaning you can legitimately pay less tax and increase your tax-home pay
  • Generous leave benefits, including:
    • 3 days paid extra leave at the end of the year
    • Up to 16 weeks paid parental leave
    • 2 days of paid cultural and community engagement leave
