The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research family is today remembering Professor Peter Thompson AM, who passed away yesterday. Prof Thompson was past Deputy Director and Laboratory Head of Cardiology Clinical Trials.
Perkins CEO, Professor Peter Leedman AO, issued a statement to staff, researchers and associates this morning:
“It is with deep sadness that I must share the news that Professor Peter Thompson AM passed away yesterday.
“Peter was a remarkable man in every way. He was a pioneering cardiologist, brilliant researcher, passionate mentor and true friend to the Perkins.
“He achieved so many things throughout his life. From establishing himself as one of Australia’s leading cardiologists to mentoring hundreds of clinicians and researchers to pioneering wine making in Margaret River, Peter embraced life, leadership and learning.
“His most recent contribution to preventive cardio care with Dr Mark Nidorf, the repurposing of the gout drug colchicine, was globally recognised.
“Peter was a teacher, doctor, researcher and advocate. He was also a great friend to many including me. I feel truly privileged to have worked alongside him. I learnt so much from him.
“There is much more to say about Peter but for now, please keep his wife Jane and family in your thoughts.”
