"You have cancer."

Every year, more than 14,000 West Australians will hear those words.

1 in 3 of us will die from cancer. And while there have been many advances in treating some cancers, the hardest-to-treat cancers are still taking our loved ones far too soon.

That’s why we’re asking you to email your MP and urge them to support the Perkins proposed Comprehensive Cancer Centre for West Australians.

While cancer treatment and care from doctors and nurses in Western Australia is world-standard, it is fragmented, disconnected and under pressure. The Perkins Comprehensive Cancer Centre for WA will provide world-leading research-driven care, putting you at the centre of your cancer treatment. Nowhere else in WA does this.

The Federal Government has already committed $375 million towards the Perkins WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Now, we need your support to urge the WA Government to match those funds so you and your loved ones can get the best cancer treatment, like they do in other states.

Why does WA need a Comprehensive Cancer Centre?

Sadly, about 90 West Australians have to leave the State each year to get the world-leading cancer treatment they deserve, simply because it is not available in WA.

We live in the wealthiest State in the country. The WA Government is investing in our existing hospitals and we believe they can also afford to fund the Perkins WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre and provide a level of research and research-led care like nowhere else in WA.

You can help make that a reality – use the form to send an email to your MP.

About the Project

In 2022, the Federal Government allocated $375 million in its budget to help us deliver the Perkins WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Since then, we have been working with the State Government and consulting with stakeholders on a business case which will help them to decide to provide matching funds so we can build this project for all West Australians.

In February this year, the WA Government took a big step towards supporting the project by approving our Strategic Investment Plan for the project. This approval confirmed the Perkins as the Principal for the project, which would deliver inpatient and outpatient services, research and clinical trials, a cancer care coordination centre, and patient support services during and post-treatment.

Patient Services

Inpatient Services

  • 90 multi-day beds, with capacity to expand by 30 additional beds
  • 40 same-day beds and chairs for treatments including chemotherapy and haematology
  • Six-eight beds for intensive care and high dependency patients

Outpatient Services

  • 36 specialist clinics for ambulatory care
  • Space allocated for two radiation oncology bunkers
  • Four operating theatres, with room for two more in future
  • Two procedure rooms
  • Seven imaging services including CT, MRI and PET

Research and Clinical Trials

  • Expanded clinical trial capacity, building on the existing 18 beds at Linear Clinical Research
  • A mix of wet and dry lab spaces
  • Embedded research units tailored to specific functions
  • A cancer tissue biobank
  • Research training, including pathways to commercialisation
  • Strong multidisciplinary leadership and a culture of research

This ensures the very strong focus on medical research for the trickiest and hardest to treat cancers and  it will complement and boost cancer services being provided in the north, east, south metropolitan and regional areas.

Cancer Care Coordination Centre

  • Services include care coordination, patient navigation, and information support
  • Virtual health services for regional, remote, and Aboriginal patients
  • Collaboration with WA Country Health Service (WACHS) Command Centre

Patient Support Services

  • Urgent review and rapid access services
  • Family amenities located near multi-day beds
  • Transitional palliative care for high-acuity patients
  • Wellness and survivorship programs for ongoing support

It would also give patients, their families and the doctors looking after them, access to the research and facilities at the centre regardless of where they live in WA
